Desislava Tomova

At 18 years Lluнs Miсarro (born in 1949 in Barcelona, Spain) founded in Barcelona "Cine Club Arts". He worked as an art critic and was known as a producer of independent films, among which " Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives" (dir. Apichatpong Verasetakul, 2010), winner of awards at festivals in Rotterdam, winner of the Palme d"Or in Cannes 2010, "Finisterrae" (directed by Sergio Caballero, 2011 ) and films of Manuel de Oliveira and Lisandro Alonso. Retrospectives of Miсarro were presented in Paris, Cali, Montevideo and Tangiers. After several documentaries Miсarro made his directorial feature debut with "Stella Cadente", presented at this year"s edition of SFF.

Why did you choose this story? What excites you in it?
The first thing that provoked me to choose this story is that it is unknown. I was surprised that a man who used to be the King of Spain is known today to no one. This was the topic of a research study. I wanted to shed light on that story. That was my main motive. Moreover, this movie covers also the theme of loneliness. The crisis is perceived as a source of inspiration and of resistance – although an unusual way.

What is nowadays Spain compared to Spain at the time of Amadeus I of Savoy?
I offer here the viewer hallucinations look at the world of Amadeus I, who in the early 1870 has been a King of an unstable Spain at that moment, for two years. The action is set in the XIX century – a period of many conflicts, with many bombings and assassinations of politicians, constant social pressure in terms of church and state, territorial aspects, different identities and nationalities of the Iberian Peninsula. All these topics are placed in focus, discussed and clarified. After the Spanish Civil War there still persists a differentiation among many in the progressive left and the extreme right conservative people. As is well known, Catalonia wants to be separated from Spain and to become an independent province.

How do you present the topic of sexuality in the movie?
Sexuality is present in our lives in different forms. People have sometimes huge  problems to express that kind of feelings. There is no freedom. No normalcy. It"s not about perversion in my movie (the scene with the melon). It is to be viewed more like eroticism.

Your characters form amorous triangles between themselves. What is the relationship between the sexes in your movie?
We are all sexual – neither straight nor homosexual. Each one of us orients one’s inclination in a certain direction. The soul like many things in nature can be polyvalent. This is a film that tries to convey the variety of aspects that sexuality may have.

How beautiful French pop music cohabits with the characters in your movie?
This music had an important place in my youth years. We can go either to hear a concert of Wagner, to go to the festival "Sanremo", or to buy CDs of Sylvie Vartan or of Charles Aznavour. A great influence upon me was the age of chanson. Here, I mix different kinds of music:  classical (such as Mozart, for an example) with modern pop music. For expressing the emotions, both types of music are equally important.

Your movie is quite extravagant – I would dare to say it is even a scandalous one. How do criticism and censorship in Spain react?
Actually, it is extravagant, because I myself am a bit extravagant. I do like the colors, I do like fantasy… The film was well received by critics in Spain. It is too early to say anything definite about it. This is only the second festival we attend. The movie was just completed. At the end of January it was participating in a festival in Rotterdam and now is here in Sofia. Then I am planning to show it to other festivals in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Munich, etc. But I don`t have very good feedback. In Spain, critics like it very much as an example of copyrighted and non-commercial cinema. It will also appear in many other places related to cinema.

When the dream merges with reality?
No one can understand. Often though we live in a dream that seems like a reality: you and I speaking here in Sofia in a hotel, at this table. We learn to perceive things in a material way. But there is also the perception by mind and by the emotions. There are many parallel worlds. I look at the cinema as an illusion, as fantasy, as a game.

The interview has posted in the website of Sofia Film Fest
